The art and science of leveraging experience
"Leadership " is dificult to define.  An enormous about has been written on the topic, and many different types of leadership have been identified. These include traditional leadership, pragmatic leadersip, transformational leadership, servant leadership, generative leadership (one of my favorites) and more.   There is some truth in all of these.
The key point for me is the starting point.  My experience and research, much of it in the world of education, suggests that leadership is a state of being - a way that a person is in the world.  A leader is someone who has decided to take personal responsibility for his or her own life, and who consistently works towards that goal.  From this perspective, a leader is someone who takes to heart the message, "to thine own self be true."

That is when a person is able to satisfy the definitions offered by others.   Read more
